Lichtenberg is a district, but it's also the name for a part of this district. To differentiate both from each other, the part of the district is called "Alt-Lichtenberg".
If you rent a vacation apartment in Berlin Lichtenberg, you are situated right in the centre of former East Berlin, and its border is marked by the Rheinstraße. At the north, the Landsberger Allee as well as the Storkower Straße mark the border.
This district benefits from the perfect idyll of a suburban town, whereas, at the same time, it is situated near the city centre of Berlin.
In Karlshorst, another part of the district Lichtenberg, you can find beautiful mansions, the trotting track and a big market square. Thus, Karlshorst, traditionally, is a neighbourhood of the wealthy Berlin people.

the palace of Friedrichsfelde in the animal park Berlin
|
The Tierpark (German: animal park) in Lichtenberg is the biggest scenic animal park in Europe, as it accomodates about 7.500 animals of nearly 1.000 species in an area of 160 hectare. It is situated in the former grounds of the baroque palace Friedrichsfelde. This palace might not be booked as a vacation apartment, but it's definitely one of the great sights of Berlin Lichtenberg.
The Tierpark is also famous for the memorial place in honour of the socialists where we can find the monument for Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg. "The dead remind us" is written on a block that served as a setting for anti-capitalist demonstrations in the German Demoratic Republic.

Moreover the German-Russian museum is also steeped in history. In this building the National Socialists capitulated in the fight for Berlin in 1945. After that, the Russian military administration established its head quarter there.
In addition, the former headquarters of the Ministry of State Security of the GDR in the Normannenstrasse is of great historical importance, too. The memorial place, located in the former residence of secret service chief Erich Mielke, shows surveillance material and the life stories of people that fell victim to the "Stasi" (from Staatssicherheit - state security serivce). The premises remained completely untouched and so they give an authentic insight into the style of the 1950's.

view onto the city park |
If you need a rest from the commotion of the big city, the perfect place will be the city park of Lichtenberg, a green space with about 5,3 hectares. It is a popular recreational park with a small open-air stage. There you'll see mothers with their baby buggies, dogowners with their four-legged friends and you can walk along a duck pond on the artificially arranged bow of a hill above the freight depot.
The biggest children and youth theatre of Germany is situated to the south of the park and is considered one of the most renowned ones of its type.
The park itself is located in the centre of the old heart of Lichtenberg between Scheffelstraße, Möllendorfstraße, Parkaue, the theatre at the Parkaue and the railway tracks of the city train.
