Vacation Apartment Berlin Hohenschönhausen

Although Hohenschönhausen rather belongs to the residential districts of Berlin, it offers a lot of sights that are also known outside of the municipal border. Thus, a vacation apartment in Berlin Hohenschönhausen is a good possibility to discover this young district.
During the 1960's and 70's the development of Berlin has changed a lot and so did the city structure. Estates of new buildings were built in the outskirts of the city and today they are testimonies of the architectural development in those days. So, the appearance of Hohenschönhausen, similar to the ones of the Berlin districts Marzahn and Hellersdorf, was mainly characterized in the 1980's. Today's district of Berlin Hohenschönhausen only emerged from the district Weißensee in 1986. In the course of this, round the village centres of Alt-Hohenschönhausen, Malchow, Wartenberg and Falkenberg child- and family-friendly estates containing wide green spaces and  recreation areas developed.

In the village centre of the historical Hohenschönhausen you can find the oldest buildings of the district. There is the Tabor Church, a typical Brandenburg fieldstone church, the palace of Hohenschönhausen and the old city hall. Farther south, the memorial Berlin-Hohenschönhausen is situated, in which the central detention center of the GDR was housed and in which numerous oppositionists and  East Germans that were willing to leave the country, were detained and interrogated.
The village centres of Wartenberg, Malchow and Falkenberg, that are located a bit more outside, are especially known for their churches and other old buildings. Besides, the village Malchow is also famous for its relationship with the author Theodor Fontane.

The probably best known building is the Mies van der Rohe House in the mansion district of Hohenschönhausen, designed by the famous Bauhaus-architect Mies van der Rohe at the beginning of the 1930's and it is considered his last work in Germany before he emigrated in 1938. Today we can find an exhibition place for modern art in this brick building, that was redeveloped as a memorial.
As the Tierheim Berlin (German: animal home), that was opened in 2002, also has a quite futuristic architecture, it became famous outside the district borders. Several times it was used as a setting in various movies, e.g. for the German serial "Tatort" and the Hollywood movie "Aeon Flux".
The Sportforum Hohenschönhausen in this district is a first-rate sports complex consisting of several gymnasiums, a stadion and a circuit track for bikes. Moreover, the Sportforum Hohenschönhausen is also the homestead for the successful ice hockey team "Eisbären Berlin".

The S-Bahn line S75 (Wartenberg-Spandau) is the fastest connection to get from a vacation apartment inBerlin Hohenschönhausen into the centre of the city. Besides the tram routes M4, M5, M17as well as 12 and 17 also are available.
