Parking within the inner city of Berlin often costs, as well. Nevertheless, the City offers several alternative possibilities. The best way is to park the car in districts near by the city centre at the several stations free of charge and take the further journey by means of the public transport. Generally, this is mostly also a much faster option, as metros and S-Bahns are not exposed to tailbacks.

Environmental Zone

Environmental Zone within the
S-Bahn-ring in Berlin

On 5th October, 2008, a new regulation became effective, which allows only motor vehicles with a certain emission standard to approach the inner city area – the so-called environmental zone – of Berlin. Certain emission categories are labelled by green, yellow and red stickers. This environmental zone is surrounded by the Ringbahn (German for: Circle line), and is also signposted. Since January 2010 only cars with green stickers are allowed to drive through this zone. Coaches with yellow stickers are excluded from this regulation for the following two years.
