Berlin Weißensee

The District Weißensee

The name of the district Weißensee Berlin has its origin in the Low-German expression “Wittenze”, which stands for bright/white lake. In 1313 the area eventually was first mentioned in a document.

The district is well-known mainly due to its name giving lake “Weißer See” around which the region Wittenze (Low-German for: Pale lake) has grown in the 13th century. Due to its direct proximity to Berlin it has become a considerably favoured neighbourhood. In 1313 the place was first mentioned in documents. In 1920 Weißensee has finally be suburbanised to Greater Berlin.

Mainly spared from bombs of the World War II, many housing areas could be remained. The charming suburb character that is so typical for Weißensee, thus, endures until today. Mansions in Wilhelminian style, beautiful parks and numerous newly developed residential buildings underline the character of the neighbourhood.

Weißensee enjoys a high recreational and relaxation factor, due to its low number of inhabitatnts. Nevertheless, every inhabitant and visitor of Weißensee is provided with an absolute proximity and an optimal connection to the city centre by means of the local transportation, in order to quickly get to the best clubs, nicest restaurants or shopping zones of Berlin.

The shopping provision in Weißensee is mainly limited to the daily needs of the inhabitants. That means, there are many supermarkets as well as the well-known discounters, drugstores and several more specialist shops. Who sets value on an extensive shopping tour, is best provided with an ideal connection to the city centre by means of the local transportation.

Comparable to the shopping possibilities in Berlin-Weißensee, the nightlife offerings look nearly the same. Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, however, the club Harmonie in the Streustraße is open. It might not belong to the hippest clubs of the party city, but for those who don’t want to travel too long, this might be a nice option to go out. Here a mixed audience meets with an average age of about 20 years. The music spectrum mainly ranges in the current charts.

Culture & Entertainment

The Jewish cemetery Weißensee has been established in 1880 at the ending of today’s Herbert-Baum-Straße and displays an impressive and important landmark for Weißensee and also Berlin. With around 115,000 burials and a total area of 42ha it is the biggest still remaining Jewish cemetery throughout Europe. Already the philosopher Herman Cohen, the publisher Samuel Fisher, as well as physicist Eugen Goldstein found their eternal peace there. Moreover, on the cemetery 809 urn spots of Jews that have been killed in the concentration camps are located.

East of the lake Weißen See, in the Berliner Allee, the evangelic parish curch Weißensee is located. The late medieval building has constantly been changed and extended until the 19th century. Its fundaments, however, originate from the second half of the 13th century. After the parish church has been completely burned out in 1943 in the course of the World War II, it has been extensively restored between 2005 and 2006.

A true tourist attraction is the annually happening “Weißenseer Blumenfest” (a so-called flower festival). Taking place since 1963 it now already is an inherent part of the district’s culture and extends from the Antonplatz along the Berliner Allee, up to the big lake stage. Besides the flower show the visitor will further find much festival tents and carousels.

Sport & Recreation

Many recreation and sport possibilities can be mainly found during summer around the lake Weißen See. On the one hand it hosts the outdoor bath Weißensee with a lot of playing facilities for the little ones, such as a water playground. Also it includes a barrier free park area. Further, an open-air stage and a vivarium care for the entertainment aspect, whereas diverse restaurants and cafés cater for the physical well-being of their guests. The recreational factor is extended by wide sunbathing areas, a boat rental, as well as walking an cycling paths. During winter, on the other hand, the lake transforms into a huge ice rink.

Eat & Drink

One of the most popular cafés in Weißensee might be the Milchhäuschen directly at the lake. In the beginning of the 20th century it was the milk collecting place for breast milk from wet nurses for children in need. Today especially the belonging lake patio invites many guests for lingering.

Furthermore, an extensive walk through the district might be recommendable, during which nearly everybody will find the right restaurant. Weißensee is not really well-known for the best restaurants of the city, but surely richly drawn through with many smaller gastronomic establishments.

Local Transport

The district does not posses a connection to the subway network, but is well connected to the city centre as well as to surrounding districts, through the S-Bahn (German for: Suburban railway) and the tram network. This way the neighbouring party and scene district Prenzlauer Berg is easily and quickly accessible, as well as the centre of Berlin.
