Berlin Wedding

The District Wedding

The former workers’ housing area Wedding has been suburbanized to Berlin in 1861 and is a local district of Berlin-Mitte since the district reform in 2001. In the 18th century the extensive colonisation took place in Wedding and since then it could mainly keep its character as a workers’ housing area. Today the appearance of Wedding is primarily formed by the old buildings of the period of promoterism and the multi-storied buildings of the social apartment building from the 1970's and 80's. The exception is located between Schillerpark and Volkspark Rehberge – in the “African Quarter” – where cooperative housing estates of the 1920's and 30's narrow the typical green spaces. Furthermore, the UNESCO world heritage Schillerpark-Siedlung, as well as the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation are located there.

With a location near the inner city, surrounded by green spaces and with an ideal local transportation, Wedding is an optimal place for a vacation apartment.

The Gesundbrunnen-Centre in the Badstraße offers a nice combination of leisure, shopping and experience on more than 25,000m². The about 100 stores include the typical commercial shops, whereas cafés and restaurants provide for a little rest for each shopper. Furthermore there are diverse events hosted frequently which make a visit in the Gesundbrunnen-Centre even more interesting.

Furthermore, also a store of the Karstadt chain has been established in the Müllerstraße and welcomes for an extensive shopping tour.

Additionally, Wedding is richly drawn through by diverse store fronts where you surely find something nice for yourself.

Electro enthusiasts often are lured to the Fate Club. On weekends here at the S-Bahn (German for: Suburban railway) station Humboldthain an audience of the age groups between 20 and 30 meets and celebrates together to the sounds of the best electronic music.

The La Charanga in the Brüsseler Straße is extremely prominent at the younger party generation (between 18 and 20 years of age). From the older, always favoured, Oldie-Hits, over Mainstream-Pop, Reggae and Rock everything is played Wednesdays until Saturdays.

Culture & Entertainment

The Leopoldplatz – among the Wedding inhabitants always called “Leo” – has its name already since 1891, named after Leopold I, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau. The long-scaled square is defined by the streets Nazarethkirchstraße, Müllerstraße, Schulstraße and Maxstraße. On the south-western part the Nazareth church is located, which has been inaugurated in 1835 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It is one of the four Schinkel Suburb Churches, which are all established according to an akin structural design. Its name has its origin in the native place of Jesus – Nazareth. In the middle of the Leopoldplatz also the New Nazareth Church is standing that has been designed by August Adolf Spitta and was finished in 1893. It has been established, as through the rapid growth of the community the old church became too small. Furthermore, the square is decorated by a fountain complex and a bronze sculpture with the title “Adorant” that is latin for “Adorer”.

The Anti-War-Museum is located in the Brüsseler Straße and is the first museum world wide that has been founded for purposes against the war by the war opposer Ernst Friedrich in 1925. At present it documents the horror of the former World Wars as well as pacific actions and the current war situation world wide. Furthermore the visitor can view an air-raid shelter, where the interior has been reconstructed true to original. The museum is opened throughout the whole week, the entrance is free.

At the Bernauer Straße in the district Wedding of Berlin one can view the memorial of the documentation centre Berliner Mauer, which has the purpose to commemorate the victims of the construction of the Wall and the division of Germany. In 1961 the GDR border guards started to wall up all entrances and windows on the southern side of the street, in order to finally completely take down the building in 1980. Eventually, in 1985 also the midst on the border laying reconciliation church has been blown up. Today the memorial Berliner Mauer is composed of the memorial for the victims of the Wall construction and the German division, as well as the Documentation Centre and the “Chapel of Reconciliation”.

Sport & Recreation

The public park Rehberge, near the same named subway station, now already exists since the 1920's in Wedding and has a size of about 70ha. Here one gets good possibilities to go walking or cycling. Furthermore, it includes playgrounds, a 20m high toboggan run, an open-air stage, as well as a vivarium. Also three lakes have been applied to the public park in the course of its  development – the smaller Perlingsee, the larger Möwensee and the Entenpfuhl.

The Schillerpark is about 29ha wide and extends along the Barfusstraße. Here Berliners and visitors can walk or simply lay in the sun. Furthermore, there are playgrounds and padding pools for the little ones. In wintertime a toboggan run cares for fun for the whole family.

Further 29 hectares of wide green space are provided by the public park Humboldthain at the Brunnenstraße. Moreover the visitor finds walking paths, sunbathing areas, playgrounds, a rose garden, and outdoor bath, as well as a water garden and a viewing platform there.

The winter season is annually decorated by the opening of the Erika-Heß Ice Stadium in the Müllerstraße. Those renters of a vacation apartment in Berlin-Wedding that want to go ice skating are recommended to visit this during the winter weeks.

On the other hand, during the summer season, the outdoor bath Plötzensee at the Nordufer (street name) is a favoured destination – not only for the inhabitants of Wedding. As the cleanliness and tidiness is daily cared of here, also the entrance fee for the usage of this very clean lake is required. The lake bath is equipped with all kinds of things one might expect. The sandy beach with sun beds provides for a perfect beach coulisse. For the sportive activities table tennis tables, volleyball fields, basketball fields and a paddleboat rental are offered. But also a waterslide has been included here and the possibility to visit the adjacent nude beach is also offered.

Eat & Drink

Wedding is further richly equipped with diversified restaurants, bars and cafés. The café Schadé in the Tegeler Straße, for example, is a cosy combination of cocktail bar and restaurant. Every day throughout the week another reason is provided to visit this location. Whereas a Pizza & Pasta buffet is provided on Mondays and Wednesdays, the Thursdays and Fridays make a nice difference with the cocktail nights. The Sundays are reserved – as in most Berlin cafés and restaurants – for the Brunch buffet.

Wine enthusiasts are often lured to the wine bar Rutz in the Chausseestraße. Every dish has its appropriate wine in this gourmet restaurant. Who doesn't have enough knowledge to decide for a wine to the different courses, is recommended to ask one of the competent personnel for help.

The Korea House in the Nazarethkirchstraße – like the name already indicates – provides its guests with delicates that are personally and authentically prepared by the Corean cook and owner in this quite small location. The menu is further quite diversified.

Quite varied it gets in the Schraders in the Malpaquetstraße. The restaurant equally is a bar and a café and includes all kinds of nationalities of dishes on its menu. Thus, delicious tapas, pasta and pizza as well as salads are prepared and asked for daily. Also here, on Sundays, the famous brunch buffet is prepared with a wide range of warm, cold, sweet and savoury dishes.

Local Transport

The S-Bahn (German for: Suburban railway) lines S2 and S25 travel through Wedding and make the northern part of Berlin and a little of the state Brandenburg accessible and travel southwards also until Brandenburg. Besides the line S1 passes Wedding and the inner city and leads further until Wannsee in the south-west of the city. Wedding is further well located directly on the circle lines S41 and S42 that connect the district perfectly with the west and the east of Berlin.
