Berlin Pankow

The District Pankow

The district is especially well-known through the song “Sonderzug nach Pankow” (German for: Special train to Pankow) written and performed by the German singer Udo Lindenberg. Its name originates from the little river Panke, that emanates in the south of Bernau and flows into the Spree in Mitte passing Pankow. Pankow developed in 1920 and now forms the northern edge of Berlin.

As during the war only 3% of the buildings in the district have been destroyed, today still the architecture of the Wilhelminian style and the Art Nouveau can be observed, as well as some examples of the Bauhaus architecture. Pankow is popular for its very quiet living environment and for being in its natural style that is rather atypical for a metropolis.

As one tries to take care of the recreational aspect within the green district, the implementation of huge shopping malls is to be avoided. The Rathaus-Center in the Breite Straße, however, forms a quite extensive shopping possibility with about 80 shops on 3 floors. However, also Pankow is supplied with direct and quick connection to those districts within Berlin that are popular because of their diversified shopping areas by means of local transportation.

Similar to the shopping areas, the nightlife in Pankow can be explained. As the vicinity is popular for its quiet living environment, loud bars and clubs don’t fit into the appearance of this district. Thus, the party generation of Pankow is mostly lured into the inner city. It's not unusual for them to go to the southern district Prenzlauer Berg, that by the way belongs to Pankow now since the administrative reform, but is introduced separately in this travel guide.

Culture & Entertainment

The baroque palace Schönhausen in the Tschaikowskistraß in the local centre Niederschönhausen of Pankow is surrounded by a palace garden, which is flown through by the little river Panke. In the course of restoration activities that already last since 2005, the listed building is accessible for the public since December 2009.

For historically interested people the Majakowskiring in Pankow might surely be worth seeing. The ellipse-shaped street in the western Niederschönhausen with its many mansions became popular as temporary residence of many representatives of the SED.

Walkers are recommended to visit the Bucher Forst and walk along the sculpture path “Steine ohne Grenzen” (German for: Stones without borders) near the Hobrechtsfelder Chaussee in Pankow and enjoy art. On a section of about 5km one will find sculptures made of stone, wood and metal created by artists as a sign for tolerance and international understanding. Here it is best possible to combine culture with recreation.

Sport & Recreation

Near the town hall the Bürgerpark Berlin-Pankow is located. The about 12ha wide green area is flown through by the Panke and is made accessible for the public since 1907. The trees partly are up to 150 years old. The about 100 years old bald cypress stands at the riverside and is – beside the American red oak – a natural heritage and definitely worth to take a walk there. But also a diversified rose garden has been designed here, that is a hub for visitors during summertime. Moreover, a walk takes further to the artificially created hill, where a vivarium is located with mountain goats and to the aviaries at the former hunting lodge, where you will find rare pigeons, peacocks and pheasants. For a little break the café within the park is opened all year long.

A long distance bike trail to Usedom leads through Pankow – more precisely along the Panke through the palace garden of the Schönhausen palace. One also gets many possibilities to rent a bike at many places throughout Berlin. For cycling enthusiasts among the renters of a vacation apartment in Berlin-Pankow, here is the place to start for a more than 300km long cycling tour.

Mostly naturally finished, the public park Schönholzer Heide extends to 35ha in the local centre Niederschönhausen in the west of Pankow. The forest park is well equipped with hills, sunbathing areas, a football field and an adventurous playground. Through the whole park further a 1.5km long nature trail leads that shall give the visitor the possibility to go through the flora and fauna and explore the landscape within about an hour. The signs are created and hand-painted by teenagers themselves and guarantee an exciting journey through the nature.

The Sport and Culture Centre Pankow (short: SPOK) is a huge sport and leisure area that suits perfectly for a time-out from the daily big city life. Everyone who is interested in sports is in good hands there. The area is located in the Nordendstraße and is equipped with a fitness centre, as well as tennis, beach volleyball and football fields. Moreover, an indoor swimming pool and a sauna complex further cater for recreation. Another highlight is the beach soccer, which gets more and more popular since a couple of years ago.

During summer season the summer bath Pankow in the Wolfshagener Straße is opened. Besides a 50m long swimming pool there's also the jumping arrangement with an own pool from which you can jump of 7.5 and 5 meters height right into the cool water. The adventure pool is provided with a high-speed slide, as well as 2 more slides, a flow canal and water cannons. Additionally, the little ones have the possibility to enjoy the children’s pool. For those who really want to sweat, the beach sport complex is an ideal solution. But also wide sunbathing areas and a snack bar are available.

Eat & Drink

In Pankow one one can find various possibilities to have something to eat. The district is richly drawn through by various traditional smaller restaurants, where one can enjoy good German cuisine. Furthermore, all standard restaurants with international cuisine are available, such as Chinese, Indian, Italian or Mexican. For example, one can take a walk through the vicinity and decide for what seems to be best.

Recommendable is the Landhaus Pankow in the Mühlenstraße, which actually advertises with experience gastronomy. The ambiance is rather rustic and the guests are spoiled with traditional German food.

Who wants the rich choice, should go to the bordering district Prenzlauer Berg, which is quasi right around the corner. 2-3 subway stations southwards, around the Eberswalder Straße, one quickly gets decisional problems.

Local Transport

For the ideal connection by means of public transportation the subway line U2 seems to be most suitable, as it connects the inhabitants and visitors directly and quickly with the inner city. The circle lines S42 and S41 lead around the inner city, whereas the S-Bahn (German for: suburban railway) lines S8 and S85 travel northwards and southwards right to the state Brandenburg. Furthermore, Pankow is provided with a well developed tram network.
