Berlin Hellersdorf

The District Hellersdorf

Hellersdorf, a former peasant area, has been spun off the district Marzahn in 1986 as a consequence of the establishment of a newly-built quarter and transformed into an independent district. The youngest district Hellersdorf is composed of the subordinate areas named Hellersdorf, Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf. However, Mahlsdorf is the only area that has kept its village character in the course of further development and is now the most charming territory in Hellersdorf. Especially for families, the district is extremely convenient to rent a holiday apartment, as whilst the development children-friendliness has been cared of a lot. Besides, one has a fast connection to the lakescape and forests of the neighbouring federal state Brandenburg, as well as the pulsating centre of Berlin.

Shopping

Even in Hellersdorf many possibilities to go on a shopping tour are offered. Mostly, smaller shopping centres are included in the structure of the district. However, those are less provided with fancy fashion – here one rather finds widely known chain stores, such as Mediamarkt, C&A & Co. At first, the shopping mall Spreecenter in the Hellersdorfer Straße hosts some shops, that offer several products from fashion to cosmetics or groceries.

The shopping zone Helle Mitte at the Hellersdorfer Straße in the area Kaulsdorf is composed of several blocks of buildings, which are subdivided into different realms. Finally, with the diverse shops, banks, gastronomy, recreational facilities, doctors and educational establishments you can find everything you need.

Nightlife

The outlying district is less favoured for its possibilities to go out. However, there is a Club to be mentioned that is well-known and famous throughout Berlin already since 14 years – the Flirt. It is located in the Stendaler Straße and extremely stylishly furnished. It further offers its guests the ideal sound through innovative technical equipment. Unfortunately, it is only open on Fridays and Saturdays, but offers variegated parties in exchange. The prices are human, which is why especially the younger party generation is lured.

The Candela Lounge in the Hellersdorfer Promenade offers spectacular events on special occasions – next to its famous XXL food offerings. For example, the Latino Party, the Valentines Party, the Samba Shows and many more don't only pull in guests from Berlin, but also tourists.

Culture & Entertainment

Culturally interested visitors are recommended to visit the oldest building of the district – the village church. The rather simple facade doesn't tell anything about the rich interior inside. Besides the altar from the 18th Century, it contains many pieces that originate from previous centuries and, thus, turn the old church into a famous place of excursions.

Since 1960 the 200 year old farm house (German: Gutshaus) Mahlsdorf is hosting the museum of the founding period at the Hultschiner Damm. After the mediaeval village church, this is the second oldest building of the area and it's declared as a listed monument. Together with the manor park the museum is a popular destination for those renters of a holiday apartment in Berlin-Hellersdorf that are culturally interested. The exhibition includes the largest cohesive collection of items of the founding period throughout Europe, such as musical instruments and furniture. Moreover, it has often been a film location for TV and Movie productions, as well as theatre performances and even as a registry office.

Those who want to learn more about the area, should visit the district museum called Marzahn-Hellersdorf in the Street Alt-Marzahn. By now this is a listed building, as well, and, by means of several interesting items, documents, maps, literature, as well as photographs, it tells the history of the districts Marzahn and Hellersdorf, that are conjoined since 2001.

Sport & Recreation

As mentioned before, Hellersdorf is primarily attractive for recreational purposes. The Kienberg (a little hill in the district), as well as the Wuhletal (a large green area) offer good possibilities to relax and get away from the daily routine. Along the Wuhle, a little river at the border to Marzahn, there are several nice paths, which lure for recreational excursions. On the Kienberg one gets a wide view to all directions. On the one hand you can see the newly-built quarters that have been built in 1980 and are drawn through many green areas. On the other hand the hill offers a nice view on the landscape of Brandenburg – the federal state Hellersdorf is directly bordering on. Moreover, one finds ideal possibilities for connections to the natural site of Straußberg in Brandenburg by means of public transportation.

Sportive visitors are recommended to use the Wuhletal, as well as the natural landscape of Brandenburg for hiking. But also cycling tours are very favoured in these areas.

The Liberty Park offers its visitors a wide range of sport and leisure facilities. Skater and BMX-ers are provided with various sizes of ramps, a half-pipe, as well as BMX-courses. Younger visitors may use the playground with a climbing tower – including a climbing web, a swinging bridge and a long slide. Furthermore, the little adventurers are provided with a sand box, where they can bake, build and dig. The ground is connected with meadows, where one can continue playing or simply relax.

Eat & Drink

The Mexican restaurant La Paz in the Kurt-Weill-Gasse offers a nice possibility to have a dinner out. At this moment in time it already exists since 10 years ago and it set itself to authentically prepare dishes that shall spoil the guests and bring a little bit of Mexico to Hellersdorf-Berlin.

The Candela Lounge in the Hellersdorfer Promenade belongs to the most announced XXL restaurants in Berlin, where not only the dishes are at large scale. Innovation and diversity are a part of its dayly program. To every day and night time the Candela Lounge lures a wide audience with striking offerings. At night it transmutes to a cocktail bar with constantly changing events and unlimited opening hours.

The Mangobar in the Neue Grottkauer Straße offers a wide range of Cocktails at affordable prices. There is also a smaller dance floor, where one – especially on Fridays – can shake a leg. Especially younger inhabitants of Hellersdorf between the ages of 18 and 25 like to meet here.

Moreover, the Vegas Cocktailbar is located in this district, too, in the Janusz-Korczak-Straße. For example, if you drop by on a Wednesday, you catch the “Caipi Day”, where you can enjoy the famous cocktail Caipirinha for €2.50. Furthermore, you can have your drinks there every night as long and extensively as you wish.

Local Transport

The S-Bahn (German for: Suburban railway) and metro lines S5 and U5 offer a good connection to the city centre for those who want to enjoy the pulsating city life at close range. Further, the tram lines 6 and 18 travel from Hellersdorf in direction of the centre of Berlin, whereas a well developed bus line network cares for a fast connection to the surrounding areas.
